On 15 JAN 2012, for the first time, a Korean Air’s airplane landed at Nairobi, the Kenyan’s capital. The aircraft an Airbus A330-200, operated a charter flight from Seoul, under the flight number KE 9959. 120 South Koreans were on board. Two others flights are scheduled, one today (about 200 passengers are expected) and another one on 27 JAN 2012, both will be operated with Airbus A330-200s.

According to the Kenya Tourist Board director, South Korea has been identified as a major emerging market for Kenya, altought that Kenya is suffering of the lacking of direct flights to South Korea. Presently visitors have to use Gulf based airlines to connect via their hubs to Nairobi or to use  Korean Air from Seoul to Bangkok (operated in code share with Kenya Airways) or Honk Kong and then Kenya Airways (from Bangkok flights are operated in code share with Korean Air) to Nairobi.

Non stop flights  between South Korea and Kenya ?

Plans are underway, for non stop flights between both countries. Kenya Airways planned to fly to Seoul with its B787s. But the project has been put on hold, due to the delevery delays.

With the opening of direct flights, Kenya Airways (Kenya Airways & Korean Air are members of SkyTeam) will enable to provide good connections in Africa, but more especially in East Africa, to Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, where South Korea recently developped new ties with these countries.
